MISSION & PURPOSE

Mission statement of Epworth Church of Matthews is “on a mission to bring the good news of God’s love to everyone!”

Just what does this mean? We’re “on a mission” means we’ve accepted Christ’s mandate to his disciples when he left the world—we are still his disciples. (Matthew 28:19-20)

In order to do this we, church members, must have a right relationship with God by accepting his gift of salvation which came by Christ’s death on the cross.

We must also allow God to change us from our sinful, human nature to follow the example of Christ. We cooperate with him to make this happen by 1) personal Bible study and prayer, 2) being personally accountable to God and perhaps a small support accountability group, 3) growing in our own relationship to Christ and building relationships with others, 4) building a strong family, 5) becoming good stewards of our time, talents, and finances, 6) being aware of needs of people in our community, nation and world, i.e., financial, physical, emotional needs, natural disasters, etc., and exploring ways to help. This awareness will come about by becoming a good listener.

When we have ourselves in right relationship to God, then we’re ready to help others. We have the Good News and have a responsibility to share it with others. People aren’t likely to come flocking through our church doors, so we have to go to them - to meet them where they are.

The “Good News of God’s love” is John 3:16. God so loved the WORLD and anyone can come to him in repentant faith.

To “bring. . .to everyone” means bringing that “good news” to those within the church, the community, in our nation and in the world. We can do this by praying for and supporting missionaries financially, supporting our military personnel, volunteering to “go and do” ourselves, sending missionaries from our church, and inviting speakers to inform us of these needs, etc.
